Oggi la versione di un tinello da quattro padelle e niente fronzoli

    Sarà banale ma la zona della casa che più delle altre trasuda famiglia è la cucina. Qui non è un semplice preparare da mangiare per tutti, non solo una dispensa per i languorini ma un luogo dove, probabilmente come per tutti, noi passiamo più tempo assieme, dove raccontiamo le ultime vicende accadute a scuola,  le ultime del lavoro, i problemi della giornata ma anche le cose belle, le risate, le notizie del paese e dal mondo, ci confrontiamo, facciamo gli stupidi, trasformando un comune ambiente con quattro padelle nel luogo più confortevole di tutta la casa.

Quando ho iniziato a scrivere su questo blog il primo argomento è stato il restyling della cucina, un rinnovo che non è andato a cambiare alcuna disposizione e che ha mantenuto in sostanza tutti i mobili che abbiamo trovato ma che mi ha dato molta soddisfazione perchè sono riuscita a fare un grande cambiamento estetico con poche trasformazioni. 

Però si sa, la gioia spesso dura troppo poco, e infatti una terribile muffa era cresciuta dietro ai pensili e alla credenza intaccando il legno ed entrando nei vani dove tenevo cibo e pentole, facendoli diventare malsani e ingestibili. Vivendo questo spazio poi si erano aggiunti altri macro difetti di disposizione funzionale di elettrodomestici e altre parti, materiali deteriorati o comunque molto rovinati e l'idea di cambiarla del tutto era diventata una necessità. Anche la metratura era fuori standard e richiedeva obbligatoriamente una cucina su misura.

Tutto questo mi ha spinto a immaginare come avrei voluto che fosse il vero cuore della casa. Ed è qui che mi si è aperto il grande capitolo di ispirazione di deVOL Kitchens, per me le più belle cucine progettate in tempi moderni.

DeVOL Kitchens è un'azienda inglese nata nel 1989 a Leicestershire ed è un marchio iconico nel design di interni, specializzata nella creazione di cucine fatte a mano e su misura. Quando si sbircia nel loro catalogo ci si trova davanti ad un mix di estetica inglese classica e influenze contemporanee che a me fa impazzire: c'è una grande attenzione alla funzionalità e alla bellezza dei materiali naturali, saltano proprio all'occhio dettagli estetici di pregio e ad effetto. 

Per me veramente il top, qualunque linea si scelga! E da qui il sogno di averne una tutta per noi con, purtroppo a fianco, la nota dolente di cifre troppo importanti. 

Il modello su cui avevo posato gli occhi era lo Shaker, linee semplici, lavello in ceramica o pietra, scaffalature a vista, aperte, che lasciavano esposte stoviglie, maniglie a conchiglia, colori tenui che esaltano il legno naturale, no fronzoli. 

Questa è un'estetica che si ispira e prende il nome da quella minimalista e pragmatica dei mobili Shaker nati nel 18° secolo sempre in Inghilterra da una comunità religiosa, gli Shaker appunto, che grazie ad una sorta di devozione per l'artigianato aveva prodotto mobili dal design essenziale, funzionale, caratterizzato da linee pulite e che creano un equilibrio senza tempo adattandosi a interni moderni e non. 

Alcuni mobili Shaker avevano dei dettagli funzionali, come i ganci per appendere sedie o cappotti, ripiani estraibili e cassetti nascosti, questo per realizzare la loro concezione di ordine, dove tutto aveva un posto preciso e nulla era lasciato al caso. DeVOL ha ripreso tutto ciò, reinterpretandone i principi e creando cucine con un ambiente che trasmette calma e solidità senza mai risultare freddo o impersonale. Insomma ne ha fatto un capolavoro.

Questo stile si accordava così molto bene con la mia idea di cucina come luogo d'anima, dove ogni elemento è essenziale e nulla è superfluo.

         

Tutto ciò che avevo io invece era un'enorme ispirazione e un progetto in testa di come l'avrei voluta. Dal dire al fare però... si è interposto un artigiano falegname che insperabilmente è riuscito a realizzare parte delle mie idee, le più "semplici".

             

                                          

Oggi sono finalmente in pace, di più non avremmo potuto fare, abbiamo risanato completamente i muri, cambiato disposizioni con parecchi lavori di idraulica e creato dei mobili coi dettagli che volevo.

Ma soprattutto, per ora, ogni mattina, quando accendo la luce della cucina e preparo il primo caffè, respiro quell'armonia tanto cercata. La cucina resta in silenzio, quasi fosse soddisfatta di essere finalmente quel cuore della casa che sognavo... Questo spazio, così come lo abbiamo creato, sarà in grado di accogliere i nostri anni e le nostre storie. 

            

È questo, forse, che rende una cucina speciale: non solo i dettagli che abbiamo scelto o i materiali, ma la nostra storia fatta di cambiamenti e qualche imperfezione.

Anche se, in fondo, chi può sapere se tra qualche anno saremo pronti per un’altra piccola nuova rivoluzione a quattro padelle?

It might sound cliché, but the part of the house that most exudes family is the kitchen. Here, it’s not just about making food for everyone or storing snacks for cravings; it’s a space where, probably like for everyone else, we spend the most time together, sharing the latest school stories, work updates, the day’s problems, as well as the good things, the laughs, news from around town and the world. We chat, act silly, and turn this ordinary room with a few pots and pans into the most comforting place in the whole house.

When I started writing this blog, the first topic was the kitchen’s makeover, a refresh that didn’t change any layout or remove any of the furniture we found there, yet it gave me so much satisfaction because I achieved a big aesthetic change with just a few tweaks.

But, as we know, joy sometimes doesn’t last long, and soon enough, a terrible mold started growing behind the cupboards and sideboard, invading the wood and spreading into the cabinets where I stored food and pans, making them unhealthy and unusable. Living in this space, I also noticed more serious functional layout issues, deteriorated materials, or just very worn-out ones. Changing it completely became a necessity. I even had to face off-standard measurements that required a custom kitchen.

So, I started picturing how I really wanted the heart of our home to look. And that’s when I dove headfirst into the world of deVOL Kitchens—the most beautiful kitchens designed in modern times, in my opinion.

DeVOL Kitchens is an English company founded in 1989 in Leicestershire, an iconic brand in interior design, specializing in custom handmade kitchens. Browsing through their catalog, you see a blend of classic English aesthetics with contemporary influences, which I adore: there’s a strong emphasis on functionality and the beauty of natural materials, with eye-catching, elegant details.

For me, they’re truly the best, whatever style you choose. And so the dream of having one of our own began—though the price tags quickly became a reality check. The model that caught my eye was the Shaker style: simple lines, a ceramic or stone sink, open shelving that displays dishes, shell handles, soft colors that highlight natural wood—no frills.

This style draws from the minimalist, pragmatic Shaker furniture, born in the 18th century in England from a religious community, the Shakers, who, with a devotion to craftsmanship, created furniture with essential, functional designs, characterized by clean lines that achieve timeless balance, fitting seamlessly into modern or traditional interiors.

Some Shaker furniture had functional details like pegs for hanging chairs or coats, pull-out shelves, and hidden drawers, reflecting their concept of order, where everything had its place, and nothing was left to chance. DeVOL has taken all of this, reinterpreted the principles, and crafted kitchens that convey calm and solidity without ever feeling cold or impersonal. In short, they’ve created a masterpiece.

This style perfectly matched my vision of the kitchen as a soulful place where every element is essential, and nothing is superfluous.

What I had, though, was just a vast inspiration and a mental blueprint of how I wanted it to be. But, as they say, it’s easier said than done... Thankfully, I found a craftsman who, against all odds, managed to realize part of my ideas—the ‘simpler’ ones, at least.

Today, I’m finally at peace; we couldn’t have done more. We completely restored the walls, adjusted layouts with extensive plumbing work, and created furniture with the details I wanted.

But most of all, every morning, when I turn on the kitchen light and make the first coffee, I breathe in that long-desired harmony. The kitchen stays quiet, as if satisfied to finally be that heart of the home I had dreamed of… This space, as we’ve created it, is ready to embrace our years and our stories.

That’s what makes a kitchen special, perhaps: not just the details we chose or the materials, but our story made up of changes and, sometimes, a few imperfections. As long as we want to be together in this space, I know even a simple custom-made kitchen will continue to tell our story.

And who knows, maybe in a few years, we’ll be ready for a new adventure, another little revolution with our trusty four pots and pans?
